Bold Ideas, Real Impact:

AYILs Innovation Award Winners Announced

The inaugural Innovative Idea Award from the We CAN Leadership Institute received applications well above our expectations, and it was challenging to select from the many inspiring ideas submitted by young Africans.

We wish we had an unlimited pool of financial resources to support every idea. Unfortunately, that was not possible.

Three ideas were selected and announced during the closing session of the summit. In addition to the innovation itself, the committee also considered the consistency of applicants in engaging with the process and fulfilling all submission requirements.

Here are the winners:

1. SUPRACARER by Kwabena Owusu

SupraCarer presents a forward-thinking innovation in home-based healthcare, combining compassion with structured, data-driven clinical services. It aims to deliver personalized nursing, chronic disease support, and preventive care through a model that integrates technology with human-centred service. Its Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Prevention, Detection, and Management Tool is expected to be highly relevant in addressing the hypertension and diabetes crisis in urban and semi-urban Ghana.

SupraCarer aligns strongly with SDG 3: Good Health & Well-being.

A $1000 award was granted to support its clinical certification, integration with NHIA regulations, and robust quality assurance processes.

2. THE SELF-DEFENCE MOVEMENT by Nankur Ramdur

This initiative empowers young women with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to protect themselves against sexual and gender-based violence. It combines practical physical training, psychological preparedness, and non-physical self-defence strategies. The movement contributes directly to SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

It fosters resilience by transforming fear into confidence and promotes community awareness to challenge harmful social norms.

A $1000 award was given to support curriculum development with embedded ethical use clauses and participant waivers, as well as to establish a training location.

3. Special Acknowledgement: THE TENTED TALES by Evelyne Okoth

The Tented Tales is a community-powered hub that cultivates the joy of reading, storytelling, writing, and digital learning among public school students and underprivileged children. It aims to boost literacy and build leadership confidence by connecting children with student mentors, resources, and a vision for their future.

The initiative aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 13: Climate Action, and scored highly on inclusivity and community engagement.

A special award of $500 was granted to support the setup of a branded tent.

Kwabena, Nankur and Everlyne are now part of EIL cohorts. Do connect and engage with them.
